Helen Johnson’s Recent Discoveries

I have just received an email from a second cousin Helen Johnson who, while recently cleaning her late father’s house, discovered a painting by Olive Maud Brain and a mounted set of replicas of George Masters Seward Brain’s First World War medals. Helen took photos of each of the items and I have attached copies of the photos below.

George Masters Seward (1882-1948) and Olive Maud’s (1887-1950) father was George Masters Brain (c1842-1906), the subject of my next essay which I hope to post within the very near future. Helen (nee O’Neill) is the great grand-daughter of Edith May Brain – George Masters Seward and Olive Maud’s younger sister – who married Russel James O’Neill in Ardlethan in 1929.

Helen said she recalls seeing the painting hanging “over the dresser in the dining room of Russ and Edith’s … home in Maroubra. I remember Edith telling me that her sister Olive had painted it.”

Helen wishes to contact any of Olive Maud and George Masters Seward’s direct descendants who may wish to have the painting or replica medals.

If anyone wishes to contact Helen about either item, please email me at massiedk@bigpond.com.

All the best.
